![]() What makes a shelter a high kill? A shelter is considered to be a high kill if the euthanasia rate is higher than the live release rate. The states of California, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana accounted for more than half of all animal euthanized in 2019. The five states with the highest rate of animal deaths are: Connecticut, Vermont, Maine, and New Jersey. In the United States, there is a dire need for high-kill shelters. The state of California had 112,000 animals euthanized, Florida had 66,000, and North Carolina had 62,000 animals euthanized. Texas has the highest number of animals killed in shelters, with over 125,500 slaughtered. These simple steps can help reduce the number of dogs that end up in kill shelters and ultimately save their lives, and they can be taken as little as once a week. Furthermore, by adopting animals from shelters rather than purchasing them from breeders, the number of homeless dogs can be reduced while also providing loving homes for those in need. By spaying and neutering their pets, pet owners can decrease the number of unwanted dogs entering shelters, giving their new owners more time to care for them. Spay and neuter pets and adopt instead of purchasing them are the best ways to avoid ending up in a kill shelter. In some kill shelters, where dogs cannot be adopted within 72 hours, euthanizing them is the only viable option. Even though animal shelters are working hard to provide a safe haven for homeless pets, the overwhelming demand for space and resources means that some animals may never be saved. In the United States, an estimated 1.33 million dogs enter animal shelters each year, with 670,000 euthanized as a result of a lack of resources or space. ![]() There is a heartbreaking truth about how many dogs end up in kill shelters as a result of a pet overpopulation problem and a lack of homes.
